«Shalom Berlin» – that is the cordial, peaceful greeting to the city and its visitors and at the same time the motto of the Jüdische Kulturtage Berlin (Jewish Culture Days Berlin), which are taking place for the 30th time in 2017. The Jüdische Gemeinde as the organizer, once again, offers surprising and fascinating insights into the diverse Jewish culture of Berlin and Israel, within these ten days of November.
You will be able to choose from several, multifaceted events: From the festive opening in the Synagoge Rykestraße, to lively chansons of the twenties, theater, films, readings and all the way to Heavymetal or a DJ from Tel Aviv, the open day in the Jüdisches Gemeindehaus, a children‘s program in Yiddish and the German premiere of the new program by Ute Lemper. Thoughtful events are offered as well – musical remembrances and an exhibition, which displays the everyday-life of Jews in Berlin, because this consists of much more than simply religion and the memory of the Shoa. Jewish life and Jewish culture means joy, heartiness, dynamic, taking part in the city life and a healthy portion of humor. Citizens of the city Berlin and its visitors are invited, disregarding religious and political borders, to meet the possible «others» and to learn to understand and respect them. But maybe the «others» turn out not to be so different!
We welcome you to the 30th Jewish culture days and say: Shalom Berlin!
Dr. Gideon Joffe
Chairman of the Jüdische Gemeinde zu Berlin
